Building Blocks

– Alex Tehrani

Deconstructing and reinterpreting the book

Through images of graffiti, message fragments, street posters, political messages and typography, Building Blocks was designed to illustrate that we don’t necessarily take away the message intended, but zero in on fragments that catch our attention.

Building Blocks was an interpretive book art piece that played with messaging, image, narrative and interactivity to deconstruct the notion of a book. It explored how language and story are used to create our world – physically, virtually and metaphorically. Each brick told a story; the bricks as a whole told whatever story the viewer/constructor created.

The piece was interactive and the audience was invited to break down the wall and rebuild it in whichever way they wish, deconstructing and reinterpreting the message to create urban poetry and new messages in the process.
