The Little Things

We have all been faced with multiple catastrophic events and enforced isolation over the last few years, resulting in our worlds growing smaller and smaller. When navigating an overwhelming and traumatizing world, we seek refuge in the comfort of minutiae and the tenderness of the little things.

The Little Things is a personal journey, documenting through photographs the little things I noticed – sometimes for the first time, the things I appreciated, took refuge in, was comforted by and that brought me joy.

There were so many beautiful little things I’d overlooked and never taken the time to notice before. Like the trails starfish leave in the sand as they move around. Or the softness and delicate beauty of a flannel flower. The feel of leaves crunching under my bare feet. The way raindrops captured in succulent hearts look like jewels.

I started to see things in a different light, to ask questions and really consider what mattered. I found a new and deep sense of connection, belonging and peace with being present in my immediate surrounds and in living a simpler life. How fast does a forest’s heart beat? Once a year maybe? Why are we always so busy rushing around? How can we become more like the trees?

I would like to invite you to reflect on what became important to you. How did your world change as your focus narrowed? What helped you feel grounded, peaceful and connected? What did you appreciate more? What did you notice and appreciate that you perhaps hadn’t really thought much of previously? What did you find beautiful and peaceful amid the chaos?
